Toyos Clinic has been involved in research of Light Therapy to treat medical problems since 2001. Rolando Toyos, MD received an American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery Research Grant (ASCRS) to study the effects of Light Therapy to treat meibomian gland dysfunction and dry eye disease. From that research a technology and treatment was discovered called Intense Pulse Light (IPL) for Dry Eye Disease (DED). IPL has become one the most progressive treatments to treat dry eye in a long time. Over 200 clinics and countless eye surgeons around the world now utilize IPL with the Dermamed Q4 to treat DED. Some of the most prestigious Eye Clinics around the world have been trained by Dr. Toyos like The Mayo Clinic, Johns Hopkins, Stanford, Duke to name a few. Dr. Toyos has trained surgeons in several countries on his technique and technology like Ukraine, Italy, Argentina, Peru, to name a few. Dr. Toyos has several patents on Light based technologies to treat common eye conditions.
One of Dr. Toyos patents includes the use of wavelengths of light that are safe for patients to use at home. For the last 5 years Toyos Clinic has been researching the use of at home light therapy for the treatment of DED. The original research on light therapy was conducted on NASA astronauts in space. From that research many light therapies have been approved for patient use by the FDA. Toyos Clinic worked with several companies to develop a therapy that could be used by their patients. Five years later we have an FDA approved technology that we use to help patients with Blepharitis (infection and inflammation of the lids) and DED. We call this technology The Q, short for The Quantum.
Research has shown that light therapy can eliminate bacteria, stimulate better functioning of the skin and glands, safe heating of the skin like a warm compress, and improve eyelid skin. Last year at the Johns Hopkins Annual Current Concepts Ophthalmology meeting we presented research that showed that The Q improved the signs and symptoms of DED and Blepharitis. We will be presenting results of continued research on The Q at the Johns Hopkins, ASCRS, International Society of Ocular Therapeutics, and Ocular Surgery News/Italian Ophthalmology Society meeting.
